Collection:Eau de Parfum

One central natural ingredient in overdose. An immediate, lasting trail. A bold signature. Addictive comfort. The MATIERE PREMIERE style.

Every MATIERE PREMIERE eau de parfum is born of a conviction: to reveal the power and raw beauty of a natural ingredient, used in abundance. No artifice, no compromise. The ingredient takes centre stage, with a bold sillage and exceptional longevity that accompanies you through your daily life. A direct and radical approach to perfumery.

What is an eau de parfum?

MATIERE PREMIERE Eau de Parfum is defined by its concentration of fragrance essence. It contains between 20% and 25% aromatic extracts. This percentage gives it prolonged intensity and longevity. The difference is immediately noticeable on the skin: an Eau de Parfum lasts for several hours, from morning until evening, without needing to be reapplied.

Compared to eau de cologne, which has a concentration of between 3% and 5%, eau de parfum offers a richer, more complex olfactory experience. It also differs from parfum extract, which has a concentration of between 25% and 30%, offering even greater longevity and depth.

The choice between these different fragrances depends on the desired effect. For everyday use with a distinct sillage, eau de parfum strikes a balance between intensity and comfort. It is also the concentration that allows the essences to unfold fully: the key natural ingredients – woods, resins and musks – express their full character and ensure the sillage lasts. The fragrance remains detectable for several hours, from morning until evening.

Our eaux de parfum: 85% to 92% natural ingredients

At MATIERE PREMIERE, each eau de parfum contains between 85% and 92% ingredients of natural origin. The formulations are vegan and free from phthalates and colourants. This high concentration of essence ensures a consistent scent throughout the day.

The concept is based on an overdose of a central raw material. Each fragrance highlights a single ingredient: vanilla, rose, saffron, patchouli, cedar or ginger. This ingredient, selected for its terroir and extraction method, takes centre stage in the composition. The secondary ingredients serve to support and enrich this main ingredient, without ever masking it. Aurélien Guichard carefully selects certain synthetic notes whose purpose is to highlight the finest aspects of the natural notes.

Gender-neutral fragrances, for all personalities

The fragrances in the MATIERE PREMIERE collections do not follow the traditional classification into women’s or men’s fragrances. Each eau de parfum transcends the conventions of gendered perfumery and can be worn by anyone.

A fragrance does not define a gender identity. It reveals a character, a style, a whim of the moment. The olfactory experience remains the sole point of reference. This approach reflects a shift in the world of perfumery, where the composition matters more than whether the bottle is labelled ‘for women’ or ‘for men’.

Choosing a fragrance then becomes a matter of personality. Those who favour a subtle signature tend towards fresh, citrusy compositions. Those seeking a bold presence prefer amber accords or contemporary floral signatures. Independent spirits find their identity in dry woods and resins. Each niche fragrance in the MATIERE PREMIERE selection opens up a different olfactory journey.

The fragrance families of our eaux de parfum

The MATIERE PREMIERE collections span a wide range of scents. Each family offers distinct fragrances to suit every taste.

The floral fragrances feature rose, tuberose or orange blossom. The woody fragrances centre on sandalwood, cedar or patchouli. Their modern, assertive character is equally suited to everyday wear and formal occasions. The amber fragrances play on vanilla, incense and spices. Their richness creates an enveloping trail, perfect for evenings or the colder months.

The fresh fragrances, built around citrus or aromatic herbs, offer a light alternative for summer. Leather and smoky scents appeal to lovers of characterful perfumes, thanks to compositions featuring accords of birch or burnt wood. Each type of composition bears the house’s signature: an ingredient used in abundance, transformed into a fragrance, creating an instantly recognisable signature.

To explore several fragrance families before making a choice, the perfume discovery sets allow you to test or create a selection of fragrances in sample sizes.

Unique expertise: from field to bottle

MATIERE PREMIERE was born out of an approach that is unique in the world of perfumery. Aurélien Guichard, Founder and Perfumer, cultivates some of the raw materials for his creations himself. In Grasse, he grows Centifolia roses, tuberose and lavandin, which form part of several fragrances in the product range.

This approach guarantees full traceability. Each ingredient has a clearly identified origin: the Centifolia rose comes from Grasse, the saffron from Greece, the vanilla from Madagascar and the sandalwood from Australia. The terroir, growing conditions and extraction method together define the olfactory character of the final essence. This terroir-driven element gives MATIERE PREMIERE fragrances a signature directly linked to the conditions under which the raw materials are grown and extracted.

This journey from the soil to the bottle embodies a radical vision of perfumery. No compromises, no artifice. The raw material speaks for itself, in all its raw beauty. Aurélien Guichard composes each fragrance so that the raw material occupies the entire olfactory space. A single raw material dictates the composition. Classics sit alongside new creations, but the common thread remains the same: a perfumery of gesture, of the soil, of the hand.

How to apply your eau de parfum correctly?

How you apply it determines the longevity and sillage of an eau de parfum. A few simple steps can help maximise the fragrance’s duration and intensity.

Pulse points are areas where body heat is concentrated: the wrists, the crooks of the elbows, the nape of the neck and behind the ears. This heat activates the fragrances and carries the sillage. One or two sprays are sufficient.

To prolong the effect, a light spritz on your hair or clothing works well. Fabric retains the fragrance molecules for longer than skin does. Store the bottle away from light and heat to preserve the quality of the fragrance over time.

Frequently asked questions about eaux de parfum

What is an eau de parfum?

By definition, an eau de parfum is a fragrance composition containing between 12% and 20% fragrance essence diluted in a mixture of water and alcohol. This concentration places it between eau de toilette (5–15%) and parfum extract (over 20%). Eau de parfum offers sufficient intensity to leave a trail whilst remaining suitable for everyday use. Its longevity varies from 8 to 12 hours depending on the composition and skin type. At MATIERE PREMIERE, our eaux de parfum are concentrated at 20%–25% and contain 85%–92% ingredients of natural origin.

Which is better: eau de parfum or eau de toilette?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The choice between eau de parfum and eau de toilette depends above all on individual use and preferences. Eau de toilette, which is generally less concentrated, may be suitable when you’re looking for a subtle scent. Eau de parfum, which is more concentrated, is often preferred for its longer-lasting wear and greater intensity.

Depending on the occasion and your expectations regarding the scent’s presence, both options are worth considering.

How long does an eau de parfum last?

Generally speaking, an eau de parfum lasts on the skin for between 4 and 8 hours. At MATIERE PREMIERE, the creative approach and the quality of the formulations extend this duration to between 8 and 12 hours, or even longer. This duration varies depending on several factors, notably skin type and environmental conditions. Dry skin retains fragrances less well than moisturised skin. Heat and humidity accelerate evaporation. To make the fragrance last longer, apply the eau de parfum to moisturised skin and to pulse points (wrists, neck, behind the ears) or to your clothes. Fragrances rich in woody or amber notes generally last longer than fresh accords.

Which fragrance lasts longer: eau de toilette or eau de parfum?

Eau de parfum and Extrait de parfum last longer than eau de toilette. This difference is mainly due to the concentration of fragrance oils: a parfum extract contains more than 20 per cent aromatic extracts, compared with 5% to 15% in an eau de toilette. In practice, a parfum extract can last 8 to 12 hours, or even longer, whilst an eau de toilette generally fades after 2 to 4 hours. Generally speaking, an eau de parfum, with its intermediate concentration of 12% to 20%, lasts for 4 to 8 hours. At MATIERE PREMIERE, the creative approach and the quality of the compositions ensure that the fragrance lasts between 8 and 12 hours, or even longer. The choice depends on the desired intensity and longevity.
