Saffron has been a part of the history of perfumery since antiquity. This ingredient, derived from the stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower, offers notes that are at once dark, spicy and assertive, yet also bright and vibrant. Crystal Saffron takes this saffron fragrance and interprets it in the MATIERE PREMIERE style: a central ingredient at the forefront, a concise formulation, and an recognisable signature. Saffron: an ingredient steeped in history
Saffron takes its name from an Arabic word meaning ‘yellow’. It features in both perfumery and cuisine across the globe. In Greek mythology, the spice is associated with a symbol of rebirth and resurrection. From the Middle East to the Mediterranean basin, the plant has travelled over the centuries, cultivated for its flowers and the rarity of its red and yellow stigmas, harvested one by one by hand. Cultivating saffron requires patience: a large quantity of crocus flowers is needed to obtain a small amount of dried material.
Today, saffron is grown in Iran, Spain, Greece and various other parts of the world. Each origin yields a slightly different profile. In perfumery, the spice brings a spicy note, leathery facets and a hint of suede. It is this ingredient, in its Greek form, that serves as the starting point for Crystal Saffron.

A raw material grown in Greece
The saffron oil selected for Crystal Saffron comes from the Kozani region in northern Greece. Grown at the foot of Mount Olympus, it is considered to be the highest-quality saffron in the world. This is the first time Aurélien Guichard has worked with natural saffron grown in this region. The choice is based on olfactory principles: the origin, growing conditions and extraction method define the character of the ingredient. Cultivating the plant remains a demanding process, with its red stigmas being harvested by hand from each flower. This essence joins the natural ingredients that the Maison selects for their unique olfactory profiles.
The ‘overdose’ – the MATIERE PREMIERE approach
The MATIERE PREMIERE vision involves starting with an ‘overdose’ of a natural ingredient and building the entire composition around it. Crystal Saffron follows this approach. The Saffron Oil Greece is formulated to express itself directly, accompanied by a measured amount of synthetic notes chosen to bring out the raw material. The formulation remains straightforward, with the saffron scent clearly discernible. Crystal Saffron contains between 85% and 92% ingredients of natural origin. The formula is vegan, free from phthalates and colourants.

Aurélien Guichard, Founder and Perfumer of MATIERE PREMIERE, creates each fragrance. He cultivates some of his raw materials himself in the Grasse region and selects the other ingredients for their olfactory qualities. With Crystal Saffron, he has worked with natural saffron from Greece for the first time. This direct link between the raw material and the bottle – from the terroir to the extraction – reflects the Maison’s philosophy and its relationship with perfumery since its inception.
