Collection:Musc Fragrance

Musk fragrance offers an enveloping scent that is reminiscent of the skin’s natural odour, with an urban and universal character. Aurélien Guichard has used it as the central ingredient in Parisian Musc, alongside Peruvian ambrette seed, the only natural plant-based musk. He has also drawn on its musky character to transform Greek saffron into a fragrance at the heart of Crystal Saffron, Tunisian orange flower for Neroli Oranger, and lavandin from his own fields in Metal Lavender.

Musk: a fragrance that has stood the test of time

Musk is one of the oldest ingredients in perfumery. For centuries, the substance was derived from the musk deer, a small animal found in Siberia, Tibet and the Himalayas, whose gland produces this substance during the rutting season. The species has been protected since 1979 and perfumers have ceased using this animal-derived source. Today’s musk is derived from synthetic molecules and plant-based materials. The value of this ingredient lies in its ability to ensure a fragrance’s longevity and to blend seamlessly with the scent of the skin.

White musk and plant-based musks

The term ‘white musk’ refers to a clean, powdery, slightly soapy accord, associated with an idea of purity and freshly laundered linen. It encompasses several types of molecules with similar properties, used as a base in a large number of fragrances. Plant-based musks form the other category. Among naturally sourced musky ingredients, ambrette seed imparts a warm, slightly fruity scent, very close to the natural texture of the skin. A significant quantity of the material is required to achieve this effect, and it is this factor that distinguishes one musky composition from another.

Musk at MATIERE PREMIERE

MATIERE PREMIERE builds each fragrance around a central natural ingredient, used in overdose within a concise formulation. Ambrette seed from Peru, selected by Aurélien Guichard, the Maison’s Founder & Perfumer, lies at the heart of the Parisian Musc creation. In Crystal Saffron, Habanolide emphasises the vibrant, crystalline character. It intensifies the enveloping, addictive quality of Metal Lavender. In Neroli Oranger, the musks amplify the delicate floral character.

The scent of a musk fragrance

A musk fragrance does not make a spectacular entrance. It settles close to the skin and feels like a caress. The nuances range from powdery softness to a more sensual facet, with warmth and an unadulterated sensuality. These notes always serve the core ingredient of the composition; it is never the other way round.

A musk fragrance for women and men

Musk is often associated with femininity, more out of habit than olfactory logic. The world of perfumery has long associated musk and florals with a feminine image, and wood and leather with a masculine one. MATIERE PREMIERE creates its fragrances without any predefined gender. The choice is based on how the scent develops on the skin, which varies from person to person. Lovers of musky scents will find a discreet signature here, worn by women and men alike.

Eau de parfum, parfum Extrait de Parfum and intensity

The intensity of a fragrance depends on its concentration of essential oils. Eau de Cologne ranges from 3 to 5 per cent, whilst Eau de Toilette ranges from 5 to 15 per cent. The Maison’s Eau de Parfum is concentrated at 20 to 25 per cent, and the Extrait de Parfum at 25 to 30 per cent.

For the same amount of product, the Extrait de Parfum offers a richer scent and a longer-lasting trail, whilst the accords reveal greater depth. The choice between the two depends on how it is used: Eau de parfum for everyday wear, and the Extrait de Parfum for occasions when a more distinctive scent is desired.

Wearing a musk fragrance

The bottle should be stored upright, away from light and heat. Musk works best on the skin: body heat brings out the fragrance’s character and the scent trail remains detectable for hours after application. Warm areas work well, such as the crook of the elbow, the wrists and the nape of the neck.

Clean, moisturised skin retains the scent better, and the Hand & Body line – cleansing gel and moisturising lotion – prepare the skin just as effectively as other everyday skincare products. Fragrances can also be applied to clothing, where the scent lasts even longer. Once applied, a musk fragrance is best experienced over time rather than for its immediate effect.

Frequently asked questions about musk fragrance

What does white musk smell like?

White musk refers to a clean, powdery accord, reminiscent of freshly laundered linen, evoking a sense of purity. It remains subtle and stays close to the skin. Plant-based musks, such as ambrette seed, offer a warmer, slightly fruity scent, with a quality that mirrors the texture of the skin. The difference between the two lies in the intensity of the ingredient used to achieve this result.

Perfumers create their compositions by imagining colour combinations. A musk such as Exaltolide is considered a ‘red musk’ which enhances notes of red berries.

Where does the musk used in perfumery today come from?

Musk today is derived from synthetic molecules and plant-based materials. The animal-derived form, sourced from the musk deer, has not been used since the species was placed under protection in 1979. When musk is the central ingredient, as in Parisian Musc, MATIERE PREMIERE uses Ambrette Seed Peru, a plant-based absolute chosen for its olfactory profile and its similarity to the natural scent of the skin. This choice is in keeping with the Maison’s philosophy, which always favours a specific natural ingredient over a combination of components.

Is a musk fragrance suitable for both women and men?

Yes. The Maison’s fragrances are created without any predefined gender by Aurélien Guichard, Founder & Perfumer. The same musky eau de parfum can be worn by both women and men, with a unique scent profile on each person’s skin. The choice is based on this scent profile, never on gender.

How can you make a musk fragrance last longer on the skin?

Clean, moisturised skin retains the musky scent better. The cleansing gel and moisturising milk from the range prepare the skin for this, just as other everyday skincare products do. Apply the fragrance to warm areas – the crooks of the elbows, wrists and the nape of the neck – where body heat brings out the scent’s character. Perfumes can also be applied to clothing, where the scent lasts even longer.
